Barricaded Suspect Taken into Custody in Isla Vista

At approximately 11:12 am on Thursday August 18, 2022 Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office received a call about an assault with a knife that had just occurred in Isla Vista, according to Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Raquel Zick. Deputies responded to the Pescadero Lofts located in the 700 block of Camino Pescadero.
When Deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect had lunged at a victim with a knife, but the victim was not injured or struck. Deputies contacted the suspect, Brandon Schaik, 41, and he confronted them with multiple knives before retreating back into his apartment.
Patrol Deputies attempted to talk with the suspect but he never re appeared at the door. Deputies requested assistance from the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and K9 units.
The Special Enforcement Team and Crisis Negotiation Team spent three hours attempting to engage the suspect but were un successful at talking the suspect into surrendering peacefully.

At one point the suspect appeared at the door and attempted to retreat back into his apartment, SBSO K9 Zeke quickly apprehended the suspect and allowed Deputies to take the suspect into custody without further injury.
The suspect was treated immediately by Santa Barbara County Fire who was standing by near the apartment before being transported by AMR Santa Barbara County to an area hospital.
Brandon Schaik, 41, of Isla Vista was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a peace officer, resisting an executive officer, and criminal threat, according to Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Raquel Zick.
